David Beckham's $41m Brand Value Set To Boost Paris Saint Germain

  • PSG, currently the World’s 38th most valuable football club brand, is set to receive a major boost to its $64m brand value

Beckham is one of the most marketable people in the world, endorsed by companies such as Adidas, Pepsi, Armani and Samsung. A combination of attributes that are almost unique among footballers make him an unrivalled commercial prospect for potential sponsors. Aside from his legendary playing ability, there are his looks, lifestyle and an increasing amount of charitable and public work.

 

He has proved hugely valuable to many of the clubs he has played for. While at Manchester United, he won the Premier League title on six occasions, as well as all three major trophies in 1999. By the time he left Real Madrid, it had the largest commercial revenues of any club and had just clinched victory in La Liga. He has made LA Galaxy a household name for sports fans worldwide and significantly raised the profile of the MLS as a whole. This was the case even before Galaxy retained the MLS Cup, which is sure to have a significant impact on the team’s $46m brand value.

The Brand Finance Football Brands 2012 report showed Paris Saint Germain had the 4th most valuable French football club brand at $64m. PSG will be looking forward to a similar boost from ‘Brand Beckham’ to help them challenge both their domestic rivals and the top English, Spanish and Italian teams for global recognition and prestige.

Though his personal brand value of $41m is impressive, it could be significantly higher if he were to license his name for a greater variety of products, particularly sporting clothes and goods, for which there is unquestionably a demand. Beckham will continue to be a major sporting personality for years to come, whether as an ambassador (such as during the Olympics and England’s World Cup bid), a team owner (he has expressed an interest in acquiring an MLS team) or perhaps as a manager.
