Guangzhou Pharmaceutical (GPC) is a leading force in China’s pharmaceutical sector, renowned for its growth, innovation, and dedication to social impact. In a Brand Finance exclusive, GPC talks about their key achievements, sustainability initiatives, and future aspirations.

GPC has made concerted efforts to improve the “dual-effect enhancement” of its operational efficiency and economic benefits, reaping abundant achievements in areas such as high-quality development, rural revitalisation, scientific research outcomes, and innovation in talent development, among others.  

GPC has used technological innovations to facilitate and support consumers’ access to healthcare, thereby improving and ensuring people’s health, which is in line with the brand’s commitment to promoting inclusive health care for all. 

GPC’s key initiatives have received recognition from national authorities, with numerous new drug projects receiving clinical trial licenses. For instance, one of its trademarks, Baiyunshan Hanfang, was shortlisted in the “technological reform enterprises” list by the Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council last year. GPC also managed to win the title of “2023 Best Industrial Enterprise in China’s Pharmaceutical R&D Product Line”. 

In addition, the brand has used the application of new technologies to accomplish green manufacturing standards and the national “30.60 Decarbonisation” goals. These goals consist of achieving peak carbon emissions by 2030, and then carbon neutrality by 2060. Last year, one of GPC’s subsidiaries, Zhong Yi, was awarded as “The First Green Development Demonstration Enterprise in the TCM Manufacturing Sector”, as certified by the China Quality Certification Centre.  

The “WangLaoJi” herbal beverage, produced by Guangzhou WangLaoJi Great Health Industry Co. Ltd., is one of GPC’s more well-known drinks brands, and the enterprise stands out as an active promoter of sustainable development efforts within the GPC group. Aside from its plans for energy conservation and carbon emission reduction, the construction of its WangLaoji Health Nansha Base, completed in 2023, serves as WangLaoJi’s largest flagship factory and manufacturing base for the herbal drink, equipped with advanced technology and tools. With the implementation of green manufacturing systems, the base plays a prominent role in the aspect of demonstrating the development of a sustainable industry in the locality. 

GPC continues to fulfill its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate development goals simultaneously through rural revitalisation projects, among others. For instance, the brand supported the promotion of the “High-quality Development Program for Rural Vitalisation” initiative by the Guangdong province, in addition to supporting the region’s lychee industry through the WLJ Guangdong Lychee (Shantou) Industrial Park project. This park has become the largest lychee beverage production base in eastern Guangdong, providing over 200 jobs for locals. 

GPC’s other noteworthy achievements are being included in the “2023 Excellent ESG Practical Cases of Listed Companies” by the China Association of Listed Companies as well as in the “Excellent Cases in Research Report on ESG of State-owned Enterprises in Guangzhou.” The brand was also listed in the Top 100 ESG Listed Companies in China by the Securities Times and was awarded the “2023 ESG Model Enterprise of Listed Companies” by Time Weekly.
