The traditional challenges posed by copying and counterfeiting have grown exponentially as result of the wild west of the digital world. Frederick Mostert will be talking about the dangers that these political, economic, social and technological trends present to established brands and how the risks and damage can be mitigated and countered.
Frederick Mostert is a lawyer, scholar and internationally recognised authority on intellectual property issues as well as a member of the ACID (Anti Copying in Design).
Mostert is a past President of the International Trademark Association and is the former Chief Intellectual Property Counsel and Chief Legal Counsel of Richemont. He has been on the boards of both, as well as those of Net-a-Porter, the Walpole Group and the European Union Intellectual Property Office. He has also provided pro bono legal assistance to President Nelson Mandela.

Dr Frederick Mostert is a lawyer, scholar and an internationally recognised authority on intellectual property issues. He was inducted into the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame in 2015, which honours those who have helped to establish intellectual property as one of the key business assets of the 21st century.
He is a Past President of the International Trademark Association. He served as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel and Chief Legal Counsel of Richemont in London, which includes Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, and Alfred Dunhill.
Mostert has served on Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA’s Board, as well as the boards of Net-a-Porter, The International Trademark Association and others. At present he serves on the Board of The Walpole Group, the Advisory Board of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, the Adopt a School Trust, and the Steering Committee of the Lawyers Group at Classics for All.
He is currently a Research Fellow at the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre, University of Oxford, a Research Fellow at Peking University and a Visiting Professor at University College, London, and serves on the Advisory Council of the McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology Law, and is a Council Member of ACID (Anti Copying in Design).
Mostert is principal author and editor of Famous and Well-known Marks – An International Analysis which has been cited by US Federal Courts, the High Courts in the UK, the Supreme Court in Canada, the Constitutional Court in South Africa and in various other jurisdictions, as well as by other scholarly publications.
He has also authored From Edison to iPod – Protect Your Ideas. Mostert's op-eds have been featured in the Financial Times and the South China Morning Post.
Some of Mostert's most notable pro bono legal assistance has been provided to President Nelson Mandela (South Africa), the Shaolin Monks (China) and the Confucius Foundation – a children's charity (Hong Kong).
He is a member of the New York Bar and a solicitor of England and Wales. He has practised corporate law at Shearman and Sterling and international intellectual property law at Fross, Zelnick, Lehrman & Zissu in New York.
