Banking 500 2026 CMO Roundtable

04 March 2026, 16:00–19:00 UK Time

To mark the launch of the Brand Finance Banking 500 Report 2026, the Brand Exchange Club hosted a roundtable, bringing together CMOs and senior marketing leaders from leading global banks for an evening of peer-to-peer discussion.

Held under Chatham House rules, the session explored how banking brands are evolving in response to shifting customer expectations, technological change, and macroeconomic uncertainty—while continuing to build and maintain trust.

The discussion reflected on a year in which the aggregate brand value of the world’s top 500 banking brands grew by 10% to nearly USD1.8 trillion, highlighting the sector’s continued resilience and long-term strength.

Key highlights from the discussion:

  • Resilience under pressure
Despite global volatility, participants agreed that the banking sector is structurally stronger than in previous crises, supported by improved regulation, capital strength, and risk management.
  • The evolving role of trust
Trust remains central to banking brands, extending beyond reliability to include transparency, fairness, governance, and human support—particularly in complex or high-stakes decisions.
  • The rise—and limits—of AI
AI is transforming banking operations, from efficiency to personalisation. However, leaders emphasised that human interaction remains critical, with over-automation risking a loss of customer confidence.
  • Neobanks vs incumbents
While challenger banks continue to drive awareness and growth, traditional banks retain an advantage in trust, especially for more complex financial needs—highlighting a dual-banking behaviour among customers.
  • Learning from other sectors
Banks are increasingly looking beyond financial services to industries like retail and hospitality to meet rising expectations around customer experience, integration, and engagement.
  • Wealth management as a growth engine
With significant brand value growth in this segment, wealth management is emerging as a key opportunity—particularly as intergenerational wealth transfer accelerates and demand for advice increases.
