Brian Caplen has been editor of The Banker since 2003. He joined the Financial Times Group from Euromoney in 2000 where he had been executive editor of Euromoney magazine for five years. He also worked as a business editor and journalist in Hong Kong and the Middle East for 10 years. He has travelled extensively and done numerous high level interviews with prime ministers, finance ministers, central bank governors and senior executives. He has a first class honours degree In Development Studies from the University of East Anglia.

David is the CEO and founder of Brand Finance plc. David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in London. He worked in international financial management then moved into the marketing services sector, firstly as the Financial Director of The Creative Business and then as Financial Director of WCRS & Partners. He left to set up a financial marketing consultancy, which was later acquired by Publicis, the pan European marketing services group, where he worked as a director for five years.

David moved to Interbrand as Director of Brand Valuation in its London-based global brand valuation practice, leaving in 1996 to launch Brand Finance. David has represented the British Standards institute on the International Standards Committee working party on the standardisation of brand valuation methods and practices, whose draft standard (ISO 10668) was published in November 2010.

David has written many articles for the marketing and financial press on branded businesses and brand valuation and is the author of numerous publications. He also lectures on the subject of branded business, brand and intangible asset valuation at many of the leading business schools around the world.

Until the beginning of this year, Nigel was Group Marketing Director of Lloyds Banking Group. He developed the multi brand strategy for the Group, including Lloyds TSB brand proposition, “for the journey...” and secured the first official sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Pre-Lloyds, Nigel spent his career in advertising. At Lowe Worldwide in London he headed the global team that created the HSBC brand proposition ‘the world’s local bank’, and latterly was CEO Lowe Asia-Pacific. Before Lowe, Nigel worked at Y&R Europe out of Stockholm and London, where he ran Ericsson mobile phones and prior to that he ran DY&R’s agency in Hong Kong.

He began his advertising career in London at Allen Brady & Marsh before spending 10 years at Collett, Dickenson, Pearce, latterly as Director of European operations.

Peter is a senior banker with over twenty years experience with Barclays and Citigroup in London, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. He trained as a Chartered Accountant, becoming a partner with Coopers & Lybrand in 1993 before joining Salomon Brothers Asia, as regional CFO.  Following a series of acquisitions and mergers he then served as CFO for Citigroup’s Corporate and Investment Banking division in New York and London.  He led the recovery of Citigroup’s banking operations in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, helping to stabilise the US banking system in a time of great turbulence. Peter joined Barclays in 2008 as Group Financial Controller and has been CFO of the Retail & Business Banking and Non-Core divisions as well as Acting Group CFO. He is currently Barclay’s Senior Advisor in London. Over the past 15 years he has set up and overseen banking and finance operations in India and South Africa. Peter serves on the Audit Committee of HM Treasury and was latterly a Commissioner of the London Fairness Commission and Chairman of the British Airways International Advisory Board. He is actively involved with several education and financial inclusion charities, mainly in the UK, Africa and Asia. He was born in Portsmouth to a Royal Naval family and was educated at King Edward’s Witley and the University of Bristol, where he currently serves on the Ethics Committee. Peter was Sheriff of the City of London in 2016/17, is Master of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and will be, subject to election, the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London in 2018.

Bill Gajda is the Global Head of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, responsible for Visa’s Innovation programs and activities in Europe and CEMEA. He is responsible for Visa’s global relationships with Mobile Operators and leads the ‘Visa Ready’ and Venture Capital programs. He began at Visa as the Global Head for Visa Mobile, responsible for Visa’s mobile product and commercial strategies and activities.

Prior to Visa, he was Chief Commercial Officer for the GSMA, in charge of business development and led the GSMA’s Mobile Money, Mobile Innovation, Mobile Advertising and Strategic Partner Programs. Bill was previously Chief Marketing Officer at the GSMA, and responsible for the Mobile World Congress, marketing, corporate communications and member services. His previous positions in the telecom sector were Vice President, Corporate and Marketing Communications for TELUS Corporation, Vice President, Communications for Bell Canada International and Global Brand Director for Ericsson in Stockholm. His first career was in the Canadian public service.  Bill serves as an Advisory Board Member at Apigee Corporation and Danal Inc.

David’s career started at Saatchi & Saatchi as a graduate trainee, progressing through the agency world as Managing Partner at WCRS and then MD of Lowe Howard-Spink in London. 

Moving to Atlanta he worked for the Coca-Cola Company as Global Director and VP of Advertising, before returning agency-side as President of BBDO Europe, and then as a main board director and CEO of Tempus Partners.

Following WPP’s purchase of Tempus, David set up Team Vodafone for the group. In 2004 he joined Vodafone as Global Director of Brand and Marketing Communications, progressing to become Global Brand Director in 2005 and CEO of VIML (Vodafone Ireland Marketing LTD) in 2008 based in Dublin.

Returning to London, David joined Barclays in 2012 as MD of Brand, Reputation and Citizenship. 

He is currently CMO of RBS, a position he took up in July 2015. David is also the President of the WFA, Chairman of the MGGB, and a fellow of the Marketing Society.

An experienced entrepreneur, financier and corporate development advisor, Phil has over 30 years international experience across a diverse range of industries including utilities, telecoms, media, technology, and payments.  He has non-exec Board experience with a number of young growth companies that have made successful exits.  As a principal financier he has completed a number of significant transactions exploiting regulatory arbitrage.  He has held CEO roles at a number of start up companies and managed international project teams for projects worth hundreds of millions (£).  He has successful CFO experience in turn-around situations in telecoms sector in rescuing and restoring to growth.  As an entrepreneur he has founded several businesses in media and payments, with mixed outcomes.  His latest venture, a digital money bank is set to become his most successful venture yet.  He mentors a number of entrepreneurs (voluntary work).  He has a strong interest in the history of economic development and foresees the coming revolution arising from the digitalisation of finance.
